Introduction

Stoney Stanton - A History in Granite

The village of Stoney Stanton was mentioned in the Domesday  Survey of 1086 as 'Stantone' - a 'stony place' and it is built on a rocky outcrop of ancient grano-diorite, a hard stone much prized for roadmaking. Stoney Stanton, as it was later named, became a quarry village for many years. Those quarries have long since ceased and one is now known as Stoney Cove

The Domesday book records 14 households living in Stoney Stanton, and we can well imagine the population to be about 150 -200 people. In 1348, the 'black death' hit Stanton.

Now, the population is around 3500, and the village in a rural setting is now a popular commuter village in West Leicestershire which is located on the B581 which runs from Broughton Astley to Earl Shilton, 10 miles west of Leicester, England. It is well served by motorways M1, M6 and M69, both the West Coast and Midland Mainline railways and the East Midlands and Birmingham airports. The village is famous nationally for Stoney Cove, the National Inland Deep Sea Diving Centre nearby.

The Church

The first record of St Michael's Church was in 1149. The church though is not the building - it is the worshipping community and whereas we welcome you to come and see the building with its rich history and artefacts, we are keen that you come and visit us and, if possible, join us in our worship and activities. So, as it may be your first step, we hope you will enjoy your visit to our website, and whether you are just curious, just moved to the area or rethinking of the faith you once had, or just need someone to talk to... contact us, or better still, come and meet us - and join in!

Serving the Community

We serve and care for our Community, to show the love of God through His Son Jesus Christ to all so that all may share in the Good News of the Gospel.

Services

Traditionally, we are a broad church, expressing ourselves in Catholic and Evangelical ways (as well as in between!) so as to be inclusive - we want everyone to feel at home here. Our music is also broad.... we use modern hymns as well as traditional and we give equal prominance to the Word and Sacrement. Lay people take many roles in the services including reading lessons and prayers. Children are encouraged also.

Our worship centres on the Eucharist (Jesus said: 'Do this in Rememberance of Me') The following is a list of Services that are held at the church, you are of course welcome to attend any of these if you wish:

Sunday     8:30 am Holy Communion BCP (1st Sunday in month only)

09:30 am Parish Communion (except 1st Sunday in month which is an All Age Family Service)

6:00 pm Evening Service - except 2nd & 3rd Sunday in month (1st Sun. is Holy Communion)

 Thursday 9:00 am Morning Prayer

                   9:30 am Holy Communion BCP

                Feast Days  - as announced

Jesus stand among us at the breaking of the bread,
join us as one body as we worship You, our Head.
O Jesus, we love you, so we gather here;
join our hearts in unity and take away our fear
.
